Massage and Migraines

Migraines & Massage

Migraines are a neurological condition that affects a large portion of the Australian population. It is reported that 4.9 million people experience migraines

Migraine Pattern

A migraine attack follows a 4 step pattern that is repeated each time. For each person, migraine symptoms can differ but the pattern stays the same.
The migraine pattern is:

  1. Prodrome: This stage occurs about 72 hours before the painful part of the migraine begins. The symptoms can include severe exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, different food cravings and neck pain.
  2. Aura: This stage is often known for providing visual impairment. Aura can also present vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and, in extreme circumstances, temporary paralysis of parts of the body
  3. Headache: Generally, this stage is the most often felt by people. Headache can involve sensory reactions for most people including sensitivity to light, sound and smells. Often it is at this stage that people consider a massage to provide relief from the pain.
  4. Postdrome: This stage includes recovery from the migraine and allowing the body to rest.

Migraines can be debilitating for a large majority of sufferers and they often seek any pain relief possible. Massage has widely been proven to provide those who suffer from migraines, relief from their symptoms. Dawn Buse, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurology, has supported the use of massage to provide relief from migraine symptoms.
